CRAU History and Impact:

Personality:

He seems quite sincere... But I sense darkness lurking beneath.

When the player is first introduced to Dimitri, he appears every inch the embodiment of a prince — both literally and in the fairytale sense of the word. He is immediately shown to be kind, respectful, and earnest. The ideal heir to a country that heavily values chivalry and knightly pursuits.

During introductions for his fellow classmates, he’s quick to offer praise and emphasize their strengths over any weaknesses or personality quirks, and he remains amicable and upfront with almost everyone. Despite his serious (and sometimes stiff) disposition, he prefers not to be held apart due to his title or position. Instead, he encourages his fellow Blue Lions, commoners and nobles alike, to treat him as an equal rather than their future ruler. He displays compassion for the disadvantaged and is capable of wisdom and insight when it comes to disputes between people or different systems of belief. Multiple times he’s shown questioning the necessity of conflict, trying to find middle ground and balance rather than commit to a single side without considering all potential angles. He tends towards idealistic solutions and strongly believes in gradual reformation and change through acceptance instead of violent means.

Even his occasional weakness or flaw, such as a propensity to overwork himself or brief flashes of frustration and snappishness, does little to diminish the polite and responsible impression he gives off.

Behind Dimitri’s fair-mindedness and seeming maturity, however, lurks another side to his personality. One that we see several signs of early on. Felix, a childhood friend, who now views him with disgust refers to him as a “boar” and “beast”; titles he accepts without argument. The visceral emotional ways he reacts to killing and the loss of life in general. A concerning bloodthirstiness evident when faced with people who show a willingness to harm innocents. Even the way in which he describes himself, awkwardly and with none of the generosity shown to his other companions, indicates a flawed sense of self and hints at the complex history behind his outwardly put-together facade.

Most of these cracks and discrepancies can be traced back to the Tragedy of Duscur and its aftereffects. When Dimitri was thirteen, he became the sole survivor of a massacre that claimed the lives of many of those closest to him. His father was beheaded, his stepmother disappeared in the chaos, and all the knights who had accompanied them were slaughtered. When the people of Duscur were blamed for the incident, Dimitri came to their defence and attempted to dissuade his uncle, the Kingdom’s regent, from pursuing action against them unjustly. A noble but ultimately fruitless protest. In the end, Faerghus ran a brutal campaign; wiping out the majority of the men, women, and children of Duscur and driving the survivors from their homeland.

If it were not for Dedue, the single citizen of Duscur he was capable of saving, and the responsibility he owes to the fallen, it’s likely Dimitri would never have been able to continue living after those dual tragedies. As it is, he’s suffered from nightmares, headaches, ageusia, and hallucinations in the years that have followed. The last appearing in the form of spectres of the dead who cruelly reflect and represent his guilt for surviving and his failure to enact revenge on behalf of the fallen. The need to fulfill their retribution is one of his primary goals and the motivation that served to bring him to Garreg Mach originally.

In the light of... everything above, it’s no surprise that Dimitri’s mental stability is next to nonexistent. The compassion and empathy he displays towards those around him are felt equally for the dead. A condition that leads him to willingly sacrifice his future and moral compass for the sake of completing the justice he feels they’re owed. The cruelty and savage enjoyment of violence he shows when confronted with reminders of the past or those who cause suffering serves to fuel his own self-loathing. After all, if no cause is enough to justify the act of killing, then he's just as monstrous as the rest. At the same time, he can’t just abandon his duties to the dead, no matter how bloody his hands become.

In two of the four routes, this destructive cycle proves to be his undoing and Dimitri loses himself entirely under the weight of his burdens, getting both himself and his loyal companions needlessly killed in the name of vengeance. In the third, he stays moderately more in control but still dies without ever reconciling this conflicting nature. Only in the Azure Moon path, where Byleth chooses to teach the Blue Lions, does he manage to recover from the worst of his delusions and move forward towards a healthier future — for both himself and his country. This comes with the knowledge that he will never be entirely free of the ghosts from the past, nor can he fully atone for the worst of his actions, but it's still his responsibility to carry on and look forward.

However, at this particular canon point, he stands a long way from reaching that balance. The mask of a responsible student, prince, and house leader has slipped time and again—varying from benign oversharing to depraved displays of violent intent—but it has not broken entirely. How and when it will, whether he’ll be able to recover from the wreckage of his own mindset, and the effect Deerington could have on that journey remains to be seen.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:

Crest of Blaiddyd | Dimitri has a minor crest of Blaiddyd. In gameplay terms, this means he has a small percentage change to randomly get an increase in the effectiveness of his combat arts at the cost of double weapon durability damage. This ties into his strength below.

Strength | As part of his crest/bloodline, Dimitri is incredibly (almost inhumanly) strong. This is reflected in the game itself (highest strength cap + high strength growths) along with various mentions throughout the story, such as the time he lifted a wagon or his history of breaking weapons/sewing needles/scissors and so on. This is the source of his dislike for delicate tasks.

Combat Skills | Dimitri has had a great deal of education when it comes to combat and weaponry, having begun training at a young age. His specialties include lances (and associated polearms), swords, and horseback riding. Due to the nature of Three Houses gameplay, all students are technically capable of learning any skill, but the first two listed are his primary skills and the ones associated with his specific Great Lord class, along with authority. In terms of magic, his spell list can include a few lightning spells and healing. However, this isn't a talent he has any natural skill or inclination towards.

Also, in addition to strength, Dimitri has extremely high stat growths in pretty much every category except magic, resistance, and luck. This reflects his status as a well-rounded melee fighter who is agile despite his size and with solid defence (outside of magic).

Other | As crown prince, Dimitri has a well-rounded education in the necessary aspects a ruler requires and is experienced with warfare and battlefield tactics. He's charismatic despite his earnest personality (or because of it) and his occasional moments of awkwardness. He’s skilled in authority and has experience leading battalions and ordering soldiers in combat.

Warping | In general, Dimitri’s strength and abilities will remain unchanged. However, the frequency and effect of his crest will be more inconsistent than usual. Any healing/faith magic would be subject to the typical warp effects of worsening the injury.

Inventory:

  • School uniform
  • Silver lance
  • Concoction (3 uses/heals 20HP/same warp effect as regular healing abilities)
  • Pure water (temporarily increases magic resistance)
  • Training logbook
  • Small bag (containing oil + rags for weapon maintenance, bandages, half-complete (shoddy) sewing project and sewing supplies)

After his coronation, Dimitri spent his life reforming and ruling justly over Fódlan. He focused particularly on improving living situations for orphans and improving foreign relations. He was known for listening intently to the voices of all, and for instituting a new form of government in which the people were free to be active participants.

He lived for his people and alongside them, and was thusly dubbed the Saviour King.
